Jean Drewes provides, from within Government House, Nassau, a rare , firsthand account of what this famous and controversial couple were actually like as a team, as Governor and First Lady of the Bahamas, during World War II. Imagine her joy when she learned that the former Wallis Simpson, one of the most famous and controversial personalities in the world at that time, had selected her to be her social secretary.
Jean's memoir has over 50 illustrations and 24 Chapters about how the Duke and Duchess carried out their duties in the Bahamas and during their travels in America and Canada during WW II. You will learn of the close cooperation between America and Britain in the months leading up to America's entry into the war.
You can also see the complete list of illustrations in both editions of the book from the Home Page The author wrote her account of the Windsor Team (W.E. for Wallis & Edward) in 1965, twenty years after she left the Duke & Duchess as their private secretary in the Bahamas. The amazing scope of her observations of the royal couple is captured not only in her writing, but also in her huge collection of Windsor memorabilia of that time, now more than 80 years ago.
Did you know that the Duke made a speech at Verdun, France in May, 1939 which was broadcast by NBC in the USA but not in Great Britain? His words were those "of a soldier of the last war (WW I) whose earnest prayer is that such cruel and destructive madness shall never again overtake mankind". The former King, Edward VIII, had made many friends in America and the British Empire during his many years serving British interests as the Prince of Wales. Many of these friends stuck by him and Wallis, "the woman I love", and visited them in Nassau, Palm Beach and New York. Read all about it in "The Windsors I Knew"
In Jean's memoir, you will learn that the Duke & Duchess of Windsor cared about many causes and concepts other than hosting lavish parties and acquiring splendid things such as stunning jewelry. You can read a truthful account of the life of this intelligent, concerned and admittedly controversial couple while they served as "Team WE" in the Bahamas during WW II. You will also learn how much they both wanted to live in England after the war, and not as exiles in France for the rest of their lives. Contrast that with the current Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who recently left Britain for California. Be sure to see our section which shows some of the splendid 'Cartier' jewelry the Windsors gave to their private secretary! They were a generous and thoughtful couple!
